THE VOICES OF HEALING EXPOSITION
My Favorite Honors Experience!
For my best/favorite honors experience I will showcase an exposition I participated in during my Collaborative Practice class in the fall of 2023. This was in the form of an honors contract and paper that I did to complete it. I will use photos from the exposition to show what we talked about during the exposition. I will also add a paper that I wrote on the exposition. Lastly, I will add a final reflection of the experience and paper writing process. I will connect these to my growth as a student and professional because I know how to communicate with patients better, as well as focus on treating the person, not just the disease. I also have found that this exposition broadened my understanding of disease processes and how to use therapeutic techniques to work with patients. Overall, I feel like this exposition fostered growth in my mindset regarding treatment options for patients, introspection, and resilience.
Introduction to The Voices of Healing Exposition
"Voices of Healing" Featuring Ted Meyer, presented by the Indiana University Interprofessional Practice and Education Center—promises a deeply enriching exploration of resilience, medical complexities, and the eloquent language of art in conveying profound human narratives.
This presentation had a focus on the "Scarred for Life" project—a deeply personal endeavor for Mr. Meyer. Drawing inspiration from his own poignant journey with Gaucher's disease, Ted Meyer's artistic odyssey served as a therapeutic outlet during prolonged hospital stays and the arduous navigation of his condition's physical and emotional complexities. The inception of this compelling artistic voyage was catalyzed by an encounter with an individual whose life was reshaped by a spinal cord injury.

Impact on Personal & Professional Growth
Mindset on Treatment Options
Participating in the Voices of Healing exposition expanded my professional mindset regarding treatment by emphasizing the importance of individualized, patient-centered care. Through Ted Meyer’s experiences and the stories represented in the artwork, I learned that effective treatment is not solely about medical interventions, but also about honoring patient comfort, preferences, and lived experiences. Seeing how Meyer benefitted from having autonomy in his care, such as receiving treatment at home, reinforced that involving patients in decision-making can improve both outcomes and trust. This experience encouraged me to approach future nursing practice with greater flexibility and openness to diverse treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs.

Introspection
The assignment prompted meaningful introspection about my own attitudes and behaviors in healthcare settings. Listening to patient stories conveyed through art made me reflect on how easily providers can become desensitized to illness and focus more on diagnoses than the individuals behind them. It challenged me to evaluate how I communicate, listen, and show empathy, and reminded me that every patient interaction is an opportunity to create a safe, supportive environment. This self-reflection has helped me become more aware of my role in advocating for compassion and ensuring patients feel heard and respected throughout their care.

Resilience
Witnessing the resilience of individuals featured in the exposition profoundly impacted my personal growth and perspective on adversity. Stories such as children overcoming severe medical challenges and adults transforming trauma into powerful narratives of healing illustrated the strength patients possess even in the face of life-altering conditions. These experiences taught me that resilience is not just surviving illness, but finding meaning, hope, and strength through it. Moving forward, this understanding will shape how I support patients emotionally, encouraging them while recognizing and honoring their perseverance in their healing journeys.

Final Reflection
Participating in the Voices of Healing exposition and delivering a speech alongside the artwork was a powerful and reflective experience that deepened my understanding of patient-centered care and the role of compassion in healthcare. Engaging with Ted Meyer’s work and the stories behind each piece emphasized how scars and illness are only one part of a person’s narrative, not their defining feature, and challenged me to think more intentionally about how patients experience the healthcare system. Preparing for the expo required me to translate these visual and narrative elements into a meaningful message for others, which strengthened my ability to communicate empathy and advocate for patient voices. Overall, the assignment reinforced the importance of listening, humility, and human connection in nursing practice, and reminded me that healing extends beyond physical treatment to honoring each patient’s lived experience and story.
